Learn how to use the single most important photographic accessory- the portable flash and see how recent developments in flash technology have revolutionized lighting. This workshop takes place in a professional photo studio and includes instruction on handheld flash. Class size will be kept low to allow a more hands-on experience.
Attendees will learn how to creatively use portable electronic flash systems. We will be using Nikon SB-900 and 800 systems.
Topics scheduled for the day include:
- Flash and camera settings.
- Radio remote and wireless TTL flash.
- Studio portrait and environmental portrait lighting.
- Using flash outdoors.
- Creative light modification with umbrellas, soft boxes and reflectors.
- Creating a portable lighting kit.
- Blending exposure and white balance with ambient light.
Registration fee includes lunch.
Participants can bring a digital SLR with portable lighting gear and participate in shooting or may simply observe. A laptop is not required.

Not completely comfortable with your Digital SLR? This 2-day, hands-on class is for you. We will address all the camera functions you will need to master before the creative process kicks in. We'll deal with issues of exposure, white balance, composition and many others as we photograph in the beautiful surroundings of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. We'll learn about macro shooting as well as portrait photography. Class size will be kept low to allow a more hands-on experience. You will leave with a beautiful, large print, carefully crafted from the finest image you create at the workshop.
Registration fee includes lunch, parking and admission to the Garden.
Participants should bring
a Digital SLR camera of their choice. Participants should also bring a computer loaded
with image
editing software of their choice and a card reader or other method of
transferring images. Participants can
attend without a computer but will miss out on many of the
hands-on computer related activities.
Prior to the class, participants will receive information on recommended
equipment and software to bring.

Bill
Durrence is a professional photographer, photography instructor and consultant, who teaches in a variety of photographic workshops and tours, including Popular Photography's Mentor Series program. As an Associate with Blue Pixel, Bill is
a featured instructor of the
Nikon School. Bill graduated with
honors from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor's Degree in
Journalism and a minor in Art/Photographic Design. He
has
40 years experience as a photographer shooting editorial, commercial,
and personal assignments, and has been teaching photography for more
than 30 years.

Michael A.
Schwarz is an Atlanta-based photographer and
digital photography consultant. He is a three-time nominee for the
Pulitzer Prize and a recipient of the Dag Hammarskjöld Award
for
Human Rights Advocacy Journalism. Once upon a time he was chosen by Life magazine as
one of the country's outstanding young photographers. A frequent
lecturer on photography, Michael has completed more
than 3,500 assignments for publications and corporations. His work has appeared in USA Today, The New York Times, National Geographic Traveler, Sports Illustrated, TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, Forbes and Business Week. His corporate clients have included The Home Depot, UPS, Nike, Reebok, Best Buy and Coca-Cola. Michael has a BFA degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.
He is a Blue Pixel Certified Digital Photography Consultant
and a
featured instructor of the Nikon School.
